Miramichi is another place I've been meaning to get to this summer as I was curious to try out tubing! An opportunity came up to meet a few other people there for New Brunswick Day for an Instameet and we got to do a couple of pretty sweet things together. (Thanks @destinationnb !)
We started out the day with a pancake breakfast, which felt very . . . East Coast. ;) We then went to check out Beaubears Island with the crew!
We went out on a ten-passenger, Voyageur canoe, which was a cool experience for me as I don't think I've been on anything bigger than a 3 or 4 person canoe!
The island is a pretty cool spot. It has some of the oldest trees in New Brunswick (over 200 years) as it survived the fire of 1825. (I love trees!) It is also home to a lot of history as the "only untouched shipbuilding site left intact in Canada. The remains of slips, wharves and foundations are very visible due to the fact that no one has lived on the island for over a hundred years." As such, it is a National Historic Site of Canada. Did you know? I didn't!
If you're not into canoeing, there are lots of other options. Check them out here.
After our canoe trip, we headed out to Stewart's Tubing! Nothing like squeezing a lot into one day! That's what you have to do with Maritime summers.
We had a nice float down the river. It costs $15 for a tube. You can bring food and drinks, but may want to pay $5 for a cooler tube to take with you! They recommend you only bring what you need (hence the iPhone photos - and you shouldn't even bring that!). Just sit back and relax.
I have to say - they take really good care of you! It was mine and Jessi's first time, and we got there really close to closing time. They'd already taken their last load on the bus, so one of the managers/owners threw our tubes in the back of her truck and brought us up the river. She was so helpful and and kind to us (considering we were late!)
There were a few shallow spots on the river (since we haven't had a lot of rain), and we went a little too late in the day (brrrr), but we still had a good time!
A great spot if you're looking for a chill afternoon. Check out the weather and river conditions before you go on their facebook page, text some friends, and make a day of it!
